Simon Royce played his first football of the season for the reserves today but spent most of the game picking the ball out of the net as Southampton ran out worthy winners.

New boss John Gregory was on hand and would have been waiting to be impressed by the starting eleven.

Royce started in goal behind a back four of Karl Yelland, John Munday, Mauro Milanese and Matthew Hislop,. Egutu Oliseh made a return from his injury on the right, Armel Tchkanounte and Steve Lomas were the central pair with Scott Donnelly on the left. Upfront Ricky Sappleton was paired with Shabazz Baidoo.

It didn’t take the visitors long to hit the front, David McGoldrick tucked home Mario Licka’s through ball after just seven minutes. McGoldrick was on hand again on the half hour mark to double the lead when he headed home Feliciano Condesso’s cross to make it 2-0.

The third goal came midway through the second half when substitute Lloyd James rifled home from distance to secure a comfortable victory.

As a result of the win, Southampton leap to the top of the Central Combination League whilst defeat means Rangers slip to fifth place. The reserves are in action again next Tuesday when they travel to face Millwall.
