So often in reserve games these days it is a case of men against boys, this afternoon it was boys against boys with less ability as Rangers battered Woking reserves 6-1 at Loftus Road. It was a one sided affair from the off as the young R’s never gave their opponents a sniff.

Rangers went ahead after barely four minutes. They had won a corner when Woking keeper Aaron Howe turned a blistering strike from Adam Bernard over the bar. Bruno Luz’s in swinging delivery was sliced by a defender and Bradley Bubb had the simplest of headed goals from no more than a yard.

There wasn’t long to wait for number two and it came courtesy of Luke Townsend. Woking surrendered possession on the edge of the area and Townsend worked some space before fizzing a shot under Howe into the net. The keeper should have done better with it as it was straight at him but he didn’t appear prepared for the power generated by Townsend’s left foot.

Woking were handed a lifeline when the referee awarded them the softest of penalties. Ryan Johnson went to clear a ball and a Woking player ducked into a header. The ref deemed it as dangerous play but it was more a case of low head than high feet. Simon Sheppard stepped up to slot the kick into the net. This was Woking’s first shot on target and would also be their last.

Shortly before the break Rangers scored their third thanks to a brilliant strike from Sheldon Hussey. The R’s midfielder won a block tackle in the middle of the park and then moved forward as space opened up before him. He took aim and smashed an unstoppable shot past Howe to restore the two goal advantage.

After the break things quietened down for a while as Rangers came under little pressure from their visitors. The fourth goal finally came when Luz sent a perfectly weighted ball into the path of Bubb. He cut inside the full back before sending a left footed shot into the corner.

Number five came from sub Jermaine Blackwin. The striker chased a hopeful ball toward the keeper and could scarcely believe the gift Howe presented him with. As he attempted to clear he completely misjudged the flight of the ball and managed to hack it high into the air and back over his own head. Blackwin moved past him and held off his attempted challenge before passing the ball into the gaping net.

Number six came only seconds before the end and, as was the case with the first, came from a Luz corner. The right footed left winger swung a ball to the back post where Jon Munday was on hand to loop a header back over the stranded keeper and into the net.

In truth the score could have been a lot higher. The keeper made three or four good saves and some of the finishing was a little more extravagant than was absolutely necessary. You could understand it though as it was cigar time for the boys after about half an hour.

These were probably the two youngest reserve sides I have ever seen. The nearest most of them get to a Bic is when they are doing their homework! It was a decent game though, if not a little one sided, and Waddock will be pleased with the boys. Joe Gallen was alongside him on the bench as most of these players were his. Townsend, Howell, Bernard and Bubb in particular caught the eye.
