A Rangers reserve side that was more
like the youth team finished their
season with a 1-1 draw at home
against Millwall. As is often the
case in these games the result
doesn’t really matter, what was
encouraging though was seeing
Kanyuka, Shimmin and Hislop all
continue their comebacks from
injury.
Rangers lined up with Cole in goal
behind Yelland, Shimmin, Kanyuka and
Howell with Ukah, Munday, Cousins
and Hislop in midfield. Huge
strikers Sappleton and Jones led the
line, with Sappleton making his
first ever start at this level.
Sappleton and Munday had both gone
close for Rangers before Jones
opened the scoring from the penalty
spot. A shot from Cousins was
handled by Robinson and after
shaking keeper Brooks by the hand
Jones promptly despatched the ball
past him for his first reserve team
goal of his young career. I very
much doubt Giant Ray was exchanging
pleasantries with the keeper as he
does seem to have a bit of a mean
streak about him!
Millwall were back on level terms in
the second half when Portuguese
midfielder Carlos Fangueiro fired
past Jake Cole. Late in the game
Cole prevented Millwall from
claiming all three points with a
good stop from MacLeod.
A pretty routine end to yet another
odd season at reserve team level.
The structure of the league is no
use to man nor beast as the games
aren’t frequent enough to give
youngsters experience or get first
teamers fit after injury. The whole
thing needs revamping as the
standard is often poor.
As I mentioned earlier the bright
spots of the game was the continued
rehabilitation of Kanyuka, Shimmin
and Hislop, all of whom could have
big parts to play under the Waddock
regime. Shimmin in particular is
likely to be involved from the off
next season so the fitter we can get
him the better. |
