Kevin Gallen made a big step towards a first team return on Tuesday night as he played an hours worth of football and scored the first two goals during a 4-0 win for the reserves.

Rangers travelled to face Aldershot Town on Tuesday for a Pontins Holidays Combination League fixture and came away with all three points thanks to a comfortable looking scoreline.

Sean Thomas started in goal with Jake Cole once again left on the bench and the back four was made of Ugo Ukah, Ryan Johnson, Georges Santos and Andrew Howell. A trialist was named in midfield along with Stefan Bailey whilst Gallen (who was playing his first reserve team match for over four years), Sammy Youssouf, Shabazz Baidoo and Luke Townsend completed an attacking line up.

It took Rangers half an hour to open up the home side as Gallen found himself with an easy finish from Youssouf's blocked shot. Aldershot tried to find a way back into the game but couldn't beat Sean Thomas and, after seeing a good chance saved by the young keeper, they found themselves two down when Gallen lobbed the Shots keeper to find the back of the net.

The R's added two more goals in the second half and youth team top scorer Ricky Sappleton had a hand in both. The first saw Ricky surge through the middle of the park, shrug off two challenges only to see his shot come back off the bar, fortunately for Rangers though Shabazz Baidoo was on hand to nod it home.

However Sappleton would not be denied his first ever goal at this level and he wrapped the points up on the 80 minute mark after finding a way between two defenders to calmly fire past the Aldershot keeper and make the game safe at 4-0.

Under 18's stalwarts Harry Smart and Karl Yelland both made appearances off the bench and played their part in a comfortable win but the most pleasing news is the return to action of Captain Kev who, having come through this unscathed, will now have one eye on Saturday's first team fixture against Wolves.

Rangers reserves play again next Tuesday when we welcome Crawley to Loftus Road, kick off for that is at two o'clock.
