Rangers warmed up for the weekend
match against Reading when the two
sides squared off at reserve team
level this afternoon. In what was
hopefully a sign of things to come,
Rangers won the game 3-2 with a late
winner from Gareth Ainsworth.
Gary Waddock took charge of the side
for the afternoon and was able to
call on a host of experienced
players. Tony Thorpe and Jamie
Cureton started upfront; in midfield
were Gareth Ainsworth, Adam Miller,
who did so well against Ipswich on
Saturday, young Stefan Bailey and
Aaron Brown, who is still battling
back to full fitness.
Lewis Hamilton and Gino Padula took
the full back berths with the youth
team centre back pairing of Ryan
Johnson and Pat Kanyuka starting
their third successive reserve team
match together.
The big news though was the debut of
Italian keeper Generoso Rossi. He
would have been looking to make an
impression on the management whilst
at the same time getting back to
full match sharpness and by all
accounts he did himself no harm
today.
It was Reading who took the lead
when young Irishman Ryan Catney
slotted home Dean Morgan’s pin point
cross from ten yards out. The lead
didn’t last too long though, Tony
Thorpe slotted home a two yard
sizzler to level things at one all
before putting Rangers in front five
minutes with his second of the game.
Reading fought their way back into
the game and gave Rossi a chance to
shine as he made a succession of
saves but we eventually succumb to
the pressure when Dean Morgan fired
into the top corner with just ten
minutes left on the clock.
Just as it looked liked the points
would be shared, Gareth Ainsworth
rose to head home the winner in the
dying seconds to earn Rangers their
second straight Combination League
win. |
