Gary Waddock
took his turn in charge of Rangers
reserve side last night and saw his
charges battle to a goalless draw at
Brighton and Hove Albion.
Rangers fielded an experienced line
up sprinkled with the best of the
current youth crop and with Olly
desperately short of goalkeeping
cover a trialist lined up between
the sticks.
Former Derby defender Lewis Hamilton
started at right back with Gino
Padula on the left. Youth team
centre half Ryan Johnson started
next to
his under 18's colleague, Patrick
Kanyuka.
In midfield the ever impressive
Scott Donnelly was joined by Richard
Johnson, Marcus Bean and Serge
Branco. Up front Kevin McLeod
continued his evolution into an out
and out striker and he was partnered
by Luke Townsend, who netted the
equalizer for the under 18’s on
Saturday.
Brighton featured some experience of
their own in Richard Carpenter, who
was returning from injury and Adam
El-Abd, who impressed at right back
against us in the first team fixture
this season, was also in the
starting eleven.
Rangers found their best efforts
thwarted by Chris May in the
Brighton goal whilst Rangers
trialist keeper, rumoured to be
Shaun Allaway from Leeds, had to be
at his best to deny the Albion
attack on a couple of occasions.
Last year this fixture exploded into
life with a triple sending off
(Furlong and Pacquette seeing red
for the R’s) and a last minute
winner for the Seagulls. This time
around, despite some good pressure
from Brighton, the two teams could
only battle out a stalemate.
This was Rangers first fixture in
the Pontin’s Holiday’s Combination
Cup and there are tough looking
games against Millwall and
Gillingham to come in the group
stages. Rangers have to finish top
to progress to the knock stages so a
win against Millwall will likely be
needed.
However that match isn’t until
January; next up for the reserves is
a trip to Combination new comers
Woking in two weeks time.
