Rangers' reserves ran out 1-0 winners against their counterparts from Wycombe Wanderers this evening. The game at Chestnut Avenue was played in atrocious conditions with the standing water on the pitch being topped up for the entire 90 minutes.

A slightly unorthodox selection saw Warren Barton line up in central midfield with Wes Daly slotting in at right back. I think the idea was to make sure Barton ran his arse off. It was Barton that made the only goal of the game for Richard Pacquette. He slid in to rob a Wycombe midfielder and his slide rule pass fell into Pacquette's path. He took the ball in his stride and turned outside his marker before cracking a low shot past Steven Williams.

Chances were at a premium in the game and the conditions were not making for attractive passing football. It did mean that there were plenty of challenges flying in though and we were maybe fortunate to see only two names go into the referee's book.

Nick Culkin made a sharp save midway through the second half to deny Craig Faulconbridge when he managed to get though one on one. Rangers managed to hang on though despite some incessant pressure from The Chairboys and grabbed their first win of the season.

There were some good displays tonight. John Fletcher and Ryan Johnson both did very well against a big front pairing in Faulconbridge and Richard Harris. Fletcher in particular was commanding all night and it was impressive to hear him bossing the defensive line.

Youth team striker Luke Townsend ran his socks off all night up front and Richard Pacquette was his usual mercurial self, flashes of brilliance amongst the general apathy. The best player on the park though was Wes Daly. He put in some tremendous challenges at right back and as usual he used the ball very well. Hopefully he will follow Marcus Bean into the first team reckoning very shortly.

The left side was filled by Lee Craig and George Smee who we can only assume are trialists. Both of them looked ok and certainly worth another look.
