Rangers' reserves strolled to an
easy victory against an extremely
average Peterborough side at
Northwood tonight. With the youth
team having a cup game tomorrow
night most of the side was made up
of players too old for this game.
Nick
Culkin continued his rehabilitation
and he will be lucky if he ever gets
an easier run out than this. Apart
from a couple of half hearted
efforts to collect he had nothing to
do.
The
back four was a strange affair with
Patsy Gradley and Marcus Bean lining
up alongside regular defenders David
Wattley and Gino Padula. Padula was
excellent again and uses the ball
very well wherever he is asked to
play and does his defending with the
minimum of fuss. He even had time
for a trademark Argentinean
challenge midway through the first
half.
The
best sight of the night was that of
Ollie Burgess making another
comeback from his cruciate injury.
This was the third attempt for the
young midfielder and he came through
45 minutes seemingly unscathed.
Alongside him in the middle Wes Daly
linked well with him and they fed
the wide players of Murphy and Oli
well whenever possible.
In
attack Brian Fitzgerald linked up
well with reserve debutant Luke
Sheekey and both showed some
excellent touches. Sheekey could
have had five on another occasion as
he missed good chances in both
halves. He was especially unlucky in
the second half as he rattled the
bar with a close range effort.
The
opening goal came from the spot. Wes
Daly burst into the box and the
Peterborough defender had several
attempts to kick him down before he
eventually succumbed. Danny Murphy
stepped up to take the kick and
leathered it high beyond Posh keeper
Chatfield.
The
second goal came soon after and it
was a well worked effort. Luke
Sheekey received the ball in the box
and showed neat footwork to play in
Fitzgerald to send a fierce drive
inside the keepers near post.
It
could have been worse for Posh as
Murphy hit the post from range and
Dennis Oli went close after again
being played in by the ever
impressive Sheekey.
It was
great to see Burgess back and the
front pair were excellent all night.
They caused a host of problems for
the Peterborough defenders and this
allowed Daly and Murphy to show some
nice touches from midfield. Murphy
in particular excelled in a central
role in the second half. Gradley and
Bean also played well out of
position and Padula was as solid as
ever.
This
was an easy win and made all the
more pleasing by its nature. This
was a very young side and Breacker
will have been pleased with the way
they dominated the game from start
to finish. |
