People
always remember where they were at
significant moments in history. The
JFK assassination, the fall of The
Berlin Wall, there is now another to
add to the list, the day Brett
Angell scored a goal in a Rangers
shirt. People will say for years to
come, "I was there at Chestnut
Avenue".
Following on from the 1st
teams resounding victory at
Huddersfield, the second string
handed out a hammering to Millwall
as they ran up six without reply in
the driving rain.
The
first fifteen minutes didn't tell
the real tale of the game. Millwall
started the brighter and hit the bar
with a fierce header and forced our
mystery keeper into a magnificent
flying save. Indeed it was against
the run of play that Rangers took
the lead. Ollie Burgess played a
through ball to Dennis Oli. He beat
his man and fired in a deep cross
that was met on the volley by Leroy
at the far post. Willy Gueret in the
Millwall goal had no chance as the
ball flew in.
The
second goal came after half an hour
and was the stuff of legend. Doudou
received the ball wide on the left
and sent an indefensible cross into
the box and Big Brett Angell was on
hand at the back stick to poke home
from six yards.
At the
break Timmy Breacker pulled off
Williams and Rose (with a view to
Saturday's game) and replaced them
with Murphy and Walshe. The pattern
of the game wasn't effected however,
as Rangers ran amuck.
Angell
was next to score following an
excellent through ball from Doudou.
He sent the lumbering striker
through on goal and he drew Gueret
before slotting into the corner.
This was a goal that belied his
carthorse status and it was a
classical finish. Angell had been a
real leader on the pitch and you can
see what Holloway meant when he said
he says all the right things in the
dressing room. People like Oli and
Duncan will have appreciated his
leadership qualities.
Ollie
Burgess scored the fourth when he
killed a steepling through ball
before passing it into the corner.
Next it was the turn of Danny Murphy
to score from the spot. Dennis Oli
burst into the box only to be
brought down by Matt Rees. As the
sodden crowd called for Angell to
claim his hatrick, discretion got
the better part of valour. Murphy
stepped forward to slam the ball low
into the net.
Doudou
managed to get his name on the
scoresheet ten minutes from time. As
Millwall pressed forward for a
consolation goal Doudou managed to
spring the offside trap and calmly
slot home.
Millwall tried in vein to get back
into the game but found our mystery
keeper in inspired form. Three times
he dived bravely at attacker's feet
and made a number of fine saves. It
might have been nice to know who he
was, but I was impressed none the
less. An excellent victory, two
goals for Angell and a superb
performance from some of our young
guns. |
