The
reserves gained a comfortable 2-0
victory over Bristol Rovers this
evening at Chestnut Avenue. What was
more pleasing than the result was
the sight of Chris Day coming
through his first 45 minutes of
football since October 2001.
Day
lined up in goal behind a defence
that also included Chris Plummer.
Plums had been forced out of his
last comeback game with a back
injury but he was now fit again and
ready to resume his duties. Andy
Thomson and Richard Pacquette
spearheaded a strong Rangers line
up.
Despite seeing a lot of the ball
early on it was pretty tepid stuff
as the majority of the chances
seemed to be snuffed out by a late
interception or a sloppy final ball.
Pacquette and Thomson both saw
efforts end up in the car park
whilst at the other end Day was in
danger of straining a vocal chord so
loud were his instructions to his
team.
Rangers took the lead just before
the halftime break through a typical
poachers strike from Thomson. Wes
Daly fired in a direct freekick that
was saved by Rovers keeper Clarke.
He failed to hold the ball and
Thommo was left with a simple tap
in.
Jake
Cole replaced Day at the break and
Rangers carried on where they had
left off. Rovers had little to offer
in terms of attacking flair and any
time they did manage to launch a
ball into the box it was comfortably
dealt with by the middle pairing of
Plummer and the impressive Padula.
Rangers' second goal was a
brilliantly worked breakaway. A
Rovers corner was cleared and
everybody poured forward. Doudou
jinked his way in field and just as
it looked as though he would shoot
he slipped a pass to Ben Walshe.
Walshe made no mistake as he drilled
low past Clarke's left hand.
Thommo
should have added another couple
later in the game but a fine save
from Clarke denied him the first
time and a wild shot into the
cemetery put pay to the second.
Rovers also hit the post with a
header with their only real chance
of the game. Late in the game
Richard Pacquette limped off to be
replaced by Fitzgerald and Plummer
made way for Ifura with five minutes
to play.
The
watching Ian Holloway will have been
delighted to see two of his senior
pro's return and come through the
game unscathed. Day to be fair
wouldn't have needed a shower after
his involvement but Plummer looked
strong and commanding throughout. It
was also nice to see Thommo play a
full game and he even taught me a
couple of choice phrases with his
vast Scottish vocabulary! |
