Rangers Reserves had to dig deep to
come from a goal down to defeat
Brentford's second string at
Chestnut Avenue. In a game that
fluctuated between neat passing
football and periods of scrappy play
both teams put on an entertaining
show.
With
the recent goalkeeping crisis
Rangers had former Fulham youngster
James Bittner on goal. Chris Plummer
made his comeback from the shocking
broken ankle suffered at Swansea
last October but he wasn't to last
until half time as he was forced off
with a back injury.
Richard Pacquette and Dennis Oli
both went close before Brentford
grabbed the lead. Plummer headed the
ball out for a throw and in the
process landed awkwardly on the base
of his spine. He had treatment and
then hobbled back onto the field.
The Bees took advantage of his
immobility and threw the ball at
him, he was unable to intercept and
Mark Peters glanced a header home.
The
referee was being fussy as we have
come to expect and three players
went into the book before the break.
Richard Pacquette was booked for
petulantly kicking the ball away and
to be honest, he was at the ref all
night. Indeed, Murphy had to tell
him to shut it at one point before
he got himself first use of the hot
water.
Rangers equalised ten minutes into
the second half and the goal was all
about the ability on the ball of Wes
Daly. The diminutive midfielder
picked the ball up in the centre
circle and surged goalward. He
evaded three Brentford defenders
before crashing a low shot past the
right hand of Julian in goal.
The
winner when it came was more down to
luck than judgement. Wes Daly swung
in a corner and Ben Walshe made
tracks toward it. As he did Stephen
Hughes got a touch to divert it past
his own keeper.
Rangers had several more chances to
increase the lead. Pacquette broke
the fence behind the goal with one
effort and saw another go narrowly
wide. Keeper Julian also denied him
and Fitzgerald with smart saves.
Overall this was a good
solid performance and Rangers
probably just deserved the points.
Bittner in goal looked good
especially on crosses and Danny
Murphy was solid at left back.
Doudou looked good once he switched
wings and Wes Daly gave the sort of
performance we have now come to
expect in reserve outings. Good
game. |
