Rangers got off to a winning start
in the defence of their reserve
league title with a 1-0 victory over
Barnet. A team with a smattering of
first team experience did for a
Barnet side that were spirited
without every really posing a
threat. Youngster Jake Cole lined up
in goal behind a back four of Stamp,
Ifura, Duncan and Padula. Daly,
Gradley, Bean and Walshe started in
midfield behind a strike force of
Fitzgerald and Pacquette.
The
most notable thing about the first
fifteen minutes was the roughhouse
tactics of the Barnet skipper. His
willingness to kick anything that
moved was quite something and he
backed this up with a turn of phrase
that would make a builder blush. One
of his scything challenges led to a
freekick that Daly curled goalward.
The
goal when it came was a simple and
well-worked effort. The seemingly
revitalised Ben Walshe skipped past
a couple of challenges and flashed
the ball across goal. Richard
Pacquette had the simple chance of
tucking home from six yards. It was
strange to see him start as Holloway
had implied in last weeks web cast
that he wouldn't get many
opportunities.
Shortly after half time Ollie
Burgess made his comeback from
injury and proceeded to run the game
until the finish. He linked up well
with fellow sub Dennis Oli on two
occasions and hit the post with one
effort that rebounded and smashed
the Barnet keeper on the hooter!
Wes
Daly had now moved inside to
accommodate Burgess and he nearly
scored following more incisive
passing. Brian Fitzgerald was denied
twice by last-ditch tackles and
Marcus Bean was foiled by a good
save from the keeper.
Gino
Padula looked impressive at left
back and did well to get up
following a crunching first half
challenge. He linked well with
Walshe and they proved a constant
threat. Burgess did enough to
suggest he may nick a place on the
bench for Saturday but I would like
to see him get another game under
his belt first. All in all a win
that was more comfortable than the
scoreline suggested. |
