RANGERS TRAVEL TO HULL
Friday 11th April 2008
by Ron Norris & Simon Skinner

The aspirations of the two sides that will contest Saturday’s game couldn’t be more different as we enter the home straight. With Rangers safe they are just looking to get some good displays under their belt to impress the manager, Hull City on the other hand are gunning for promotion to the big time.

Hull City v Queens Park Rangers

TEAM NEWS

Damien Delaney is certain to return to the side against his former club after sitting out the last two games through suspension. Matt Connolly should shift inside with Damion Stewart dropping out. Akos Buzsaky should be fit to return after missing the last two with an ankle problem and Angelo Balanta and Hogan Ephraim are likely to vie for the left wing berth in Vine’s absence. Leigertwood or Mahon will make way in an effort to form a more balanced looking midfield.

Perma-tanned Phil Brown will be sweating on the fitness of influential defender Wayne Brown who has been struggling with a calf problem this week. Michael Turner, Andy Dawson and Ian Ashbee all sustained knocks in the thumping win over Watford last week but should all make the side. When teams are going for promotion the little knocks don’t seem to be as big an issue!

A QUICK GUIDE TO OUR OPPONENTS

HULL IN BRIEF: After spending last season looking anxiously over their shoulders like George Michael on a midnight stroll, The Tigers have had a tremendous campaign this time out. The signing of Frazier Campbell on loan from Manchester United has proved a master stroke, as has the recruitment of Brown and Garcia from Colchester United in the summer. With Dean Windass as potent as ever for a man that looks like he would struggle for fitness in a Sunday league side, Phil Brown’s side have wracked up twelve wins at The KC Stadium and lost just three times.

CLASH OF THE DAY: Richard Garcia v. Damien Delaney. Delaney will be as fresh as a daisy for this and should be right up for the game. The Hull fans reckoned we had been sold a pup when he joined in the transfer window but he has already made himself an integral part of the side. Garcia has an eye for goal from midfield but can also be creative with driving runs from wide and Delaney will need to be careful he doesn’t go galloping off and leave him unchecked.

RANGERS VERSUS .....

LAST TIME OUT: “Barker, having by far his best game for the R’s, took a throw on the left and between him, Vine and Ephraim the ball was worked into the path of Leigertwood. The muscular midfield man ran forward and as he reached the edge of the Hull box he opened his body out and curled a beauty into the top corner.” Queens Park Rangers 2-0 Hull City, Saturday 3rd November 2007.

Rangers have lost their last two games in Hull and you have to go way back to February 1970 for the last time Rangers took three points back to London. Goals from Marsh and Clarke secured a 2-1 victory.

GENERAL INFORMATION

THE REFEREE

Graham Laws is in charge for this one and I still have the anger burning deep inside me from his last attempt at reffing a Rangers game. He very nearly ruined a midweek game to Wrexham with a bizarre, card happy showing, which included a second yellow for Kevin McLeod for NOT fouling someone! You couldn’t make it up! This season he has booked sixty seven in twenty eight and sent two off.

SIX DEGREES OF SEP-R-ATION: Dean Windass to Dexter Blackstock. This is Windass’ second spell at Hull City and he made his re-debut against Crystal Palace. Carl Fletcher wasn’t able to face Wales team mate Freddie Eastwood later that season as Palace played Wolves as he was an unused sub. Eastwood won his fifth Wales cap in a 3-0 win against Norway. John Carew was on the losing side that day and he is a team mate of Ashley Young at Aston Villa. Whilst playing for his former club Watford he came on as a second half sub in a League Cup tie at home to Southampton. The Hornets won 5-2 and one of the Saints scorers was Dexter Blackstock.

RON AND SIMON'S PREDICT-OFF
SIMON: It is always difficult for teams with nothing to play for to raise themselves for end of season games, just ask Alan Curbishley! There is a certain amount of bad blood between the fans though so the atmosphere could be a bit spicy. Hopefully Rangers will be able to put the brakes on Hull’s promotion charge although I will be happy with a decent display to be honest. I think the home side will just shade this one though. 2-1 to Hull City.

RON: Wins at Hull are pretty rare and facing them in this form doesn't make for encouraging reading. They've lost one home game this year and have scored 12 goals in the last four! That said if the wind is blowing in the right direction we're not adverse to upsetting the apple cart and since Simon has edged ahead I have to go for a different result to get the lead back so I'll take Rangers to throw a spanner in the promotion works with a cheeky 1-0.
