RANGERS TRAVEL TO BARNSLEY
Monday 25th February 2008
by Ron Norris & Simon Skinner

The Rangers fun bus hits the road again on Tuesday as they travel to south Yorkshire for a rearranged game against Barnsley. This one was pulled earlier in the month as The Tykes had an appointment at Anfield. As with Saturday, we are playing a team separated from us by goal difference alone so defeat is out of the question.

TEAM NEWS

After the drab encounter against Sheffield United at the weekend De Canio will be hoping for a bit more swagger from his men. The return of Buzsaky should help with this and he may come in to the side at the expense of Saturday’s scorer Balanta. Don’t be surprised to see a switch back to 4-4-1-1 with Vine wide and Buzsaky behind Agyemang. Hall came through Saturday’s game unscathed but Connolly may be struggling after limping off again. If he doesn’t make it then Stewart will step in. Mahon faces a late fitness test and if fit he is almost certain to replace the disappointing Leigertwood. Ainsworth and Barker are both fit but don’t expect either to be anywhere other than the bench.

Tykes boss Simon Davey will have to make do without Brazilian midfielder Anderson De Silva after he got a knee knock against Norwich. There is better news though as Jon Macken and Lewin Nyatanga should come into the team. Nardiello will miss out as the terms of his loan from us don’t allow him to play.

A QUICK GUIDE TO OUR OPPONENTS

BARNSLEY IN BRIEF: It is certainly their cup exploits rather than their league exploits that have brought Barnsley into the public eye. Their win against Liverpool at Anfield was stunning but they have struggled to replicate such things in The Championship. That FA Cup win was followed by defeat at Norwich and they have won only two of their last thirteen league games. Like Rangers they are hunting for another twelve points to pretty much nail down football at this level for next season.

CLASH OF THE DAY: Jamal Campbell-Ryce v. Damien Delaney. Delaney has surprised many since he arrived from Hull City after the slating The Tigers fans gave him. He is susceptible to pace though and Campbell-Ryce has that in abundance. I have seen him destroy Rangers full backs on more than one occasion so Delaney will need to be at his uncompromising best.

RANGERS VERSUS .....

LAST TIME OUT: “Vine collected the ball wide on the right and immediately burst infield leaving a host of Barnsley defenders in his wake. He knocked the ball into Agyemang, and then took the return; he then sent it back to Agyemang again and headed for the middle of the six yard box. Agyemang picked him out perfectly and Vine slammed the ball into the gaping net.” Queens Park Rangers 2-0 Barnsley Saturday 19th January 2008

OTHER MEETINGS: Rangers are well ahead in the league head to head between the sides with eighteen wins to Barnsley’s twelve, there have been a further nine draws. Rangers haven’t won at Oakwell for ages; you have to go back to September 1996 for that when goals from Simon Barker, Mark Perry and Danny Dichio secured a 3-1 win.

GENERAL INFORMATION

THE REFEREE

Eddie Ilderton from Tyne & Wear is the man in the middle for this one and this will be his first Rangers game for well over five years. He took charge of a 1-1 draw at Wigan in October 2002 in League One. This season he has done even amounts of games in all three Football League divisions and has booked a respectable fifty two in his twenty three games, he has sent off three.

SIX DEGREES OF SEP-R-ATION: Brian Howard to Angelo Balanta. Brian Howard made his first team debut for Swindon following his release from Southampton against a Sheffield Wednesday side with Shefki Kuqi up front. Kuqi has this week been fined and slapped on the transfer list by Neil Warnock at Palace for flicking the V’s at the home fans. Warnock was previously the manager of Sheffield United and his long time assistant Kevin Blackwell has now taken over as manager after a brief tour of the country. Blackwell’s first league game in charge of The Blades saw him select Paddy Kenny in goal at Loftus Road where he was beaten by Angelo Balanta’s first senior goal.

RON AND SIMON'S PREDICT-OFF
SIMON: Rangers are due a performance after a second half collapse against Burnley was followed by the ugly draw against Sheffield United. De Canio won’t be happy with how we played in either of those and he will want to see a response. The return of Buzsaky could be key to getting something from this game. All things considered a point away on a Tuesday night doesn’t sound bad to me and I think we will grab one. 1-1.

RON: As Simon has noted we are overdue for another terrific performance and something I’ve admired so far about De Canio is his ability to quickly stamp out and malaise and pull us out of mini slumps. This will be a tricky one but no doubt Barnsley will be just as wary after the run around we gave them at HQ. I’d be happy with a draw but I’m feeling cocky so I’ll have us for a narrow victory. 1-0 to Rangers.
