SEASON REVIEW PART ONE: JULY 2004

Over the next two weeks we'll be reviewing the season gone, we'll look back at the key events from each month, there will be an end of season quiz, we'll analyse the interactive match ratings results this season and we'll ask you to vote in our end of season polls. First though it's time to reflect back on the formative months of the campaign as we go back to June, July and August 2004.

July 2004

Rangers confirmed the signing of former loan Ranger Lee Cook from Watford, Cook signed a three year deal with a decision on the transfer fee decision going to Football League arbitration.

Ian Holloway announced that his replacement for the departed Kenny Jackett would be, well everyone. Gary Waddock, Gary Penrice and Timmy Breacker would all share coaching responsibilities, reserve team management and act as Olly’s assistants.

Des Bulpin returned to Rangers to take on Waddock’s former Youth Team responsibilities. He wouldn’t last long…

Four more players finally signed new contracts, Martin Rowlands signed an extension to his contract, keeping him at the club until the summer of 2007, Matthew Rose signed a two year deal and the two Richard’s, Edghill and Johnson signed for up for a year each.

QPR were drawn against Swansea in the Carling Cup 1st Round giving Kenny Jackett an early return to Loftus Road.

Ian Holloway made a fruitless attempt to bring Lee Camp back to Loftus Road on a permanent basis. We were never able to table a big enough bid to create any real interest from Derby and Camp went on to establish himself as the number one at Pride Park.

Georges Santos agreed a two year deal to join QPR on a free transfer from Ipswich to much amusement from the Ipswich faithful.

QPR started their pre-season campaign in Scotland, goals from Martin Rowlands, Kevin Gallen and Tony Thorpe earned us a 3-0 win over Nairn County but a sterner test awaited against Scottish First Division Champions Inverness Caledonian Thistle who held us to a 1-1 draw, Jamie Cureton grabbed the second half equaliser.

Back on home turf Rangers were outclassed by a Maxwell inspired Ajax, Rasmus Lindgreen bagged the only goal to win the game for Ronald Koeman’s side.

Olly enjoyed a hero’s welcome when he returned home to face his old Bristol Rovers side in a testimonial match for Rovers Jamie Shore. Paul Furlong and Tony Thorpe got the goals in a comfortable 2-0 victory.

The last pre-season game saw Iain Dowie bring his Premiership new boys Crystal Palace to Loftus Road. We went on to win the game 3-0 thanks to goals from Paul Furlong, Tony Thorpe and Kevin Gallen.
