A Real Game Of Two Halves For Holloway and Davies

Billy Davies’ half time and full time emotions on Saturday were a painful mirror image of Ian Holloway’s who saw his side throw away a one goal lead after dominating the first period.

Bitterly disappointed

"I'm not the happiest bloke in the world at the minute,” Olly said referring to his previous delightful mood having secured a new contract in the week, "In the second half we stayed in the dressing room and I am bitterly disappointed”

"Preston brought the game to us and it took us 40 minutes after the break to figure out what we needed to do”

“The game turned scrappy and I wanted to change things by bringing on my substitutes, but by the time I'd got them warmed up and stripped off it was too late."

Many fans were crying out for changes long before Olly’s 73rd minute treble substitution and that’s clearly something playing on the Rangers manager’s mind.

"Maybe I should have made some changes earlier, the players were saying the wind was swirling, but I didn't see a leader out there,” he bemoaned.

Preston manager Billy Davies meanwhile was absolutely delighted his side turned what looked like a poor defeat into an encouraging win.

"We had to say one or two choice words at half-time as you can imagine, there was a lot of disappointed performances in the first 45 minutes and we let ourselves down” he said before letting us into a few dressing room secrets.

“Sometimes you just have to kick and punch at half-time and throw one or two bottles around and say what's needed to be said. That's what happened, because the performance in the first half was a big disappointment to our fans and we let ourselves down badly”

However he was as pleased with Preston’s second half showing as Olly was disappointed with Rangers’.

"Second half we upped the pace a little bit and started doing the things which we are good at. We started to get on the front foot, which is very important and all credit to the players for the way they came out in the second half and the determination they showed to get a result.”

Both managers will have arrived in training on Monday with very different priorities, Billy Davies is looking forward to keeping the push for the play offs going, however he wont let his players get carried away.

"It's obviously nice to be there,” he said “but I told the players after the game, that the time to celebrate is not now, it is the end of the season and hopefully we can get there.”

Whilst Ian Holloway feels he needs to go back to basics with his players this week.

"We seem to go three steps forward and two steps back, we lost too many headers and there were times when we never had a chance. We should have got hold of the game by the scruff of the neck.”

”Sometimes defending is about clearing your lines, like rugby, it's about getting possession up the field and we needed to do that. There are times when you just need to put your foot behind it.”
