With a double header of voting now finally closed here are
your choices of the best player, match and goal from the months of December and
January and it proved to be a period dominated by the Rangers' old guard.
First it’s the goal of the months and Decembers vote went
to Jamie Mackie for his effort at Swansea. More than half of you picked that as
the best leaving Heidar Helguson’s strike against Sunderland some
distance off the pace in second with a quarter of you preferring that one. This is Mackie’s first goal of the month win this season and third in his QPR career having picked up two nods last campaign.
Januarys winner was both predictable and deserved although it
was actually a close run thing between two goals. Tommy Smith’s stunner against
Wigan and Akos Buzsaky’s incredible free kick in the same match fought it out
between them with 54% of you choosing Smith as your favourite and the rest
picking Buzsaky. That gives Tommy his second win this season although the
first, scored at Everton, won by default being the only QPR goal in
August!
The match of the month votes were slightly barren affairs, bereft
as we have been of great games in recent weeks. Decembers was one by the
draw at Swansea as 57% of your votes picked that as your choice over the 3-2 home defeat against
Sunderland. Whilst the January pick went to the 3-1 home win against Wigan with
absolutely all of you voting for it to give it a 100% win.
Finally the player of the months awards go to Heidar
Helguson and Akos Buzsaky. Helguson picked up the December prize after a
succession of impressive performances leading the line. 41% of your votes went
to The Iceman, seeing off the challenge of Ale Faurlin who finished second with
32%. That’s the second time this campaign Helguson was won this award following
on from his October triumph and, despite appearing an unlikely choice in
August, he might be in for a good run at the player of the season vote in May.
Finally the January award went to Akos Buzsaky, no doubt
heavily influenced by his superb performance against Wigan when there was much talk of his renascence as a top flight midfielder. Akos picked up 26%
of all the votes received with Helguson again doing well but falling just short of a
double prize and settling for second place.
That brings the results to a close, and thanks for taking part in
this feature once again. All the winners go through to our traditional end of
the season vote and we’ll be asking you to pick the best from February shortly
after the Fulham game is behind us.
