Are we a long ball team?

Postby surrey chad » Sun Mar 05, 2017 5:25 pm

Warnock accused us of being a long ball team, lump it up to smith and then see what happens.

I don't think that's the case at all, anyone else noticed us playing the long ball game?

I havnt been able to watch us to much but when you have a striker who can win the ball against any centre back in the air why would you not play to that?

Our first goal was anything but a long ball team.

We will obviously play to Smith's strength's when applicable but it is not all the time.

I would only state that since Smith has arrived we seem to take 'Route 1' too often. This was often used yesterday as the midfield was more congested than the M25 at times! We do need to vary our play a bit more and that is where good ball distribution forward by Goss/Manning or Hill/Lynch/Onuoha can make a variation and huge benefits too.

As a previous post said you play to your strengths or your opponents weaknesses. :tu
If that means route 1 then so be it.
Am impressed with SMITH so far.

Has to be said that last two games 'Route 1' seemed less of choice and more of desperation. We are coming up against sides that congest the midfield, forcing us to go for long balls, and they are confident of snuffing out Smith's talent because our midfield is too far back to pick up loose or passed balls. Having said all that, it is Washington who is benefiting most as he gets passes from Smith and is controlling through balls to him much better (twice on Saturday he halted the ball up field with one touch)!

Then we were using correct tactical approach then if midfield so congested.

It would have been a good approach if that was what was followed, but generally the ball disappeared into the midfield and exited a bit like Subbuteo. It was not pretty but seemed to work if that was the plan! Certainly The Warlock cannot complain about the occasions when we did use the long ball because he was as much to blame for the midfield congestion as we were... :wink
