QPR CLINCH SMITH SIGNING

Holloway adds striker to R’s squad …

Striker Matt Smith moves to QPR from Fulham
Forward signs a three-and-a-half year deal
He will wear the number 17 shirt

QPR have signed striker Matt Smith from Fulham for an undisclosed fee. The 27-year-old has put pen to paper on a three-and-a-half year deal at Loftus Road.

Speaking exclusively to www.qpr.co.uk, boss Ian Holloway revealed his delight at adding the experienced front-man to his squad, commenting: “I think every team needs a big, strong centre-forward and Matt fits that bill for us. He’s hungry; he’s fresh; he’s honest; he’s hardworking; and he’s got a massive personality. He forces defences into mistakes by his sheer presence, look and size, but he’s more than that, because when he’s on song and scoring goals, there’s so much more to his game. His touch for a big man is absolutely exceptional. I think someone like Conor Washington will really benefit from Matt joining us, because he’ll allow us to play in a number of different styles, which is what you need in this division. I’m made up with him joining us – the deal we’ve agreed is sensational value for a player in this window.”

Smith, who is ineligible to play against Newcastle United tomorrow (Wednesday) night but could be in line to make his QPR debut against Blackburn Rovers on Saturday, is looking forward to starting the next chapter of his career in West London.

“QPR is a club with a terrific history and heritage so it’s a big honour for me to be a QPR player,” he told www.qpr.co.uk, “I’m delighted to be here and want to take this fantastic opportunity with both hands. I want to get back playing regularly and help QPR win games. If my goals can contribute to that, then all the better, but as long as we’re winning games, that’s the most important thing. I can’t wait to experience what it will feel like to pull on a Rangers shirt and play in front of the fans at Loftus Road.”

He added: “I know I’ll be judged on my goal return, but I feel there’s more to my game than that – and having spoken to the manager at length before signing here, he does as well. I want my all-round game to improve here and I’m confident that’ll prove to be the case.”

Smith will wear the number 17 shirt at Loftus Road.

Not a fan of Smith.

I predict Smith being much, much more effective than Sylla...you heard it here first! :wink

Straight replacement for Polter I'd say. Needs to score like he did at Bristol City, rather than how he did at Fulham I think.

Just goes to show if you are 6 foot 3 plus and have a bit of weight behind you, you can make it as a striker.

I've only ever seen him getting slung on in the last 10 minutes of games like a battering ram.

This guy will need to do a lot to improve my opinion of him

9 goals in fifty odd appearences and he's 27 - on the face of it I'm a touch underwhelmed. Either we've had to scrape the barrel or Ollie believes he can improve him; a 3 and a half year contract suggests confidence in him I suppose. Only time will tell.

I'm not sure the appearance table works on this one. I wouldnt mind betting most of his games were as impact sub, so 15-20 minutes is less than fair. If you compare his time at Bristol City, he scored 13 goals in 20 games. There is no way anyone on here would complain if we signed a striker who was currently on that form!
