ITALY TOUR ENDS IN STYLE

Rangers wrapped up the pre-season campaign with a 4-0 win in Italy against San Antonio Abate.

After the farce on Monday night a decent grass pitch had been found to play this one on and Waddo was able to name a proper, first team line up. Paul Jones started in goal behind a back four of Marcus Bignot, Matthew Rose, trialist Clayton Fortune and Mauro Milanese, who was making his first appearance of the summer. Gareth Ainsworth, Martin Rowlands, Nick Ward and Lee Cook made up a very attacking midfield four whilst in the absence of the injured Kevin Gallen, Marc Nygaard partnered Adam Czerkas upfront.

Nick Ward made the breakthrough when he scored his first goal for Rangers shortly before half time with a spectacular left footed volley from the edge of the area. The other goals all came in the second half, Marc Nygaard knocked home from close range after good work from Gareth Ainsworth to make it 2-0, Shabazz Baidoo did much the same to get the third and, as the final minutes ticked away, Ray Jones scored his second goal of pre-season to wrap things up at 4-0.

The Italy tour ends on decent note then after starting so badly, the game was a good scoreline for the R's and a decent work out for the players with the only worrying moments appearing to be Marc Nygaard and Martin Rowlands limping off injured, fingers crossed they are just minor knocks.

So that brings this summers pre-season campaign to a halt, the original line up of five games always looked a little sparse compared to the usual six or seven we schedule and with the Sorrento game pretty much written off that means the players have had just four matches to get ready for the season. It's possible the reserve friendly against Lewes on Monday night will see a slightly more experienced line up than Gary Waddock had originally planned now and we can only hope the games they have had are enough to knock the summer rust off.
