| R'S DEVOUR NOT SO SPECIAL K'S
Victory at
Kingstonian was almost guaranteed as soon as Sweepy started one of
his one-man anti-QPR tirades. In truth this was a very comfortable
victory against a very ordinary K's side. Rangers scored five, it
could just as easily been ten such was our dominance.
As expected
Holloway rang the changes after the disappointing showing at
Aylesbury. Bean, Daly, Padula, Bircham, Gallen and Doudou all got
starts with the last two grabbing the first half goals.
All started well
when Gallen crashed a shot against the upright only minutes in.
Steve Palmer also shot just wide following a set piece before
Rangers scored their third goal from a corner in two games. Gino
Padula swung the ball into the near post and Doudou was on hand to
head past the hapless Kingstonian keeper. Their must have been an
inquest afterwards as I'm not sure a man of five feet nothing should
get a free header from a corner.
Gallen made it
two soon after following some Giggsy like play from Dan Shittu.
Shittu produced a sublime drag over the ball that the defender not
only bought, but had a t-shirt made to commemorate the occasion. His
cross found Gallen whose half hit effort was poorly handled by the
keeper as it trundled home.
Rangers looked a
threat every time they went forward and it was only the killer final
ball that seemed to be lacking. Doudou was terrorising every
defender he came up against and Wes Daly on the right wing was
making incisive runs at every opportunity. His enthusiasm out wide
was more than matched by that of Marcus Bean in the middle. He used
the ball well whenever he could and some of his tackling was
ferocious to say the least. The way in which the ball was used was
commendable considering the pitch had more lumps and bumps than a
phrenologist's waiting room.
The first half
ended with Padula being carried from the field following a couple of
crude Kingstonian challenges. You never like to see players
stretchered off and it happened again in the second half when one of
the K's defenders went off with a potentially broken leg.
Murphy and
Carlisle came on at the break for the injured Padula and Shittu
respectively. The game continued in the same vein for a time and
then began to stagnate. Only the introduction of Andy Thomson seemed
to spark proceedings. All of a sudden the midfield were making their
runs again and Murphy was taking the right back to bits.
The third goal
came when the not yet departed Sidibe shovelled the ball into the
path of Thomson who expertly shot left footed past the keeper.
Thomson also scored the fourth from the spot. Bircham took a
slightly theatrical tumble in the box and Thommo as usual was deadly
from twelve.
Thomson also made
the fifth for Sidibe. A strong surge down the left was finished with
the perfect cross to allow the big Frenchman a simple six-yard
volley. He had earlier come close with a stinging drive just wide.
Carlisle did his
best to get on the score sheet and was unlucky on a couple of
occasions. Towards the end Holloway also found time to introduce
Lyndon Duncan and youth team centre back Marien Ifura.
This was a good
performance and result that Holloway will be pleased with. It was
infinitely better than Aylesbury on Saturday and the absence of
Palmer and Rose from midfield had a lot to do with this. With
Langley still to come back in things are starting to pick up.
