| RANGERS SUFFER
FIRST LEAGUE DEFEAT
I am desperately hoping that Rangers
are not slipping back into their old habits. For the second time in
a week, we have thrown away a game by letting in a sloppy last
minute goal. Last week we allowed Northampton to equalise and
yesterday we allowed Wycombe to steal a victory they scarcely
deserved
To be fair
neither side had seemed to do enough to warrant taking three points
from this game. Wycombe had taken the first half spoils as Rangers
were just not up to the job, the second half was a much more evenly
contested affair but neither team seemed to able to play where it
counted, the oppositions box.
For the second game in a succession, Rangers played without a
recognised left-sided defender. With Paul Bruce still not recovered
from injury it was left to Marcus Bignot to fill in at left back. He
had successfully done this in one of the pre-season friendlies,
Watford I think, but in an important league game, I can't see that
this is the way to go. He rightfully didn't want to play the hapless
Christer Warren in that position and I can only assume he feels the
real Danny Murphy is not sufficiently developed for a first team
place. I'm not so sure. I have seen Murphy play on a number of
occasions and he has always struck me as a tenacious defender with
no little attacking flair, but I don't pick the team.
We could easily have gone in at the break a goal behind. A poor kick
from Chris Day fell at the feet of Darren Currie, nephew of
ex-Rangers legend Tony Currie, luckily he seemed to dwell on the
ball and after two attempts and rounding Day, he was dispossessed.
Day had been forced to make a number of routine saves during the
half but Wycombe never really looked like they would hit the front.
Half time couldn't come quick enough for Rangers as they looked
devoid of ideas and in need of some instant inspiration from 'Olly.
I would have liked to have been a fly on the wall of the dressing
room at half time. I should think that the team talk could have
stripped paint as Rangers appeared for the second half looking
hungry. We immediately set about The Chairboys and were unlucky not
to score on a number of occasions. Andy Thomson sent a fierce volley
over the bar and Karl Connolly tested the keeper with three
long-range efforts.
By this point, the mercurial Doudou was beginning to terrorise Chris
Vinnicombe on the left of the Wycombe back four. He was booked for a
crude lunge, which left Doudou in a heap. Unfortunately, this was
just about the only protection the little man was afforded. One
challenge that went unpunished could easily have broken Doudou's
ankle.
Once again, I find the focus of my report returning to the referee.
Today we had another Premiership official, Dermot Gallagher. And
once again, we were forced to endure a fussy performance in which he
seemed to penalise the most trivial offence and miss the worst.
Second division football is not going to be a pretty spectacle but
the referee must try to help by allowing the game to flow. You can't
give a free kick every time two people challenge for a header.
Professionalism does not seem to have had any impact at all.
But back to the matters in hand. Today Rangers were too often a
toothless tiger. The back four seem able to play the ball amongst
themselves at will but when they try to involve the midfield it all
goes wrong. Today the central pairing of Bonnot and Perry displayed
an alarming lack of creativity. Fine without the ball but devoid of
ideas with it. Doudou, whilst undoubtedly being our best player on
the day created very little. Connolly on the other wing just does
not look fit to me. When he came out for the first half he looked
like he had already played that morning. Consequently he seemed
heavy legged and gave the ball away for too often.
Christer Warren eventually replaced Connolly. I am sorry to keep
harping on about Warren but the bloke is, pardon my French, fucking
abysmal. He makes you want to chew off your arm so you have
something to hit him with. Hamid Barr was on the bench and must be
more deserving of a chance that this arsehole.
Our front two of Andy Thomson and Dave McEwan is not one that we
should persist with. We all know Thomson can be deadly but you need
to create the poor bloke some chances. Today he had one clear cut
opportunity, which I think he will say he should have made more of,
and a couple of half chances. McEwan is a busy player but does not
seem to actually do anything. Very nice step overs and very pretty
drag backs, but if it is not working you have to come up with
another idea not just run into the defender in front of you. He was
eventually replaced by Richard Pacquette who also did very little. I
think it is time for the physio to sort out Leroy's knee. It is a
sad situation when you are missing a player who has only played
once.
As the game petered out into a draw which would have been fair to
both sides disaster struck. A ball from the right was slung into the
Rangers box and Chris Day cam from his goal to punch clear. Only he
didn't, he punched the Wycombe player that challenged him in the
head and before we knew it, Paul McCarthy had fired the ball into an
unguarded net. By now, we were in injury time and that was that.
We now face Bristol City on Thursday. They have won three games out
of three and in two away games have scored five goals whilst
conceding only one. I feel confident about us keeping it tight if we
play for the entire game and not just 89 minutes, but I can't see
how we will score. We are not exactly gifted with midfield
playmakers and I think this is going to count against us. I am
hoping that playing in the evening may allow us to turn in the sort
of busy performance seen against Stoke and Bury, the blazing
sunshine of the last two games hasn't helped but that cannot be an
excuse.
We have dropped to ninth place after this result and three points
are needed if we are to try to re-assert our authority on this
league. We can't wait as we may be left behind and I for one am
already fed up with this poxy division. |
