GOLDEN GALLEN
GRABS GLORY AS RANGERS ROAR TO FOUR
What a difference 3 days makes! After the humiliation of being
dumped out of the cup on Sunday Rangers responded in the best
possible manner. It was obvious that the signing of Kevin Gallen had
given a lift to fans and players alike. Christ knows we all needed
one!Gallen replaced
Griffiths in the starting line up, Danny Shittu made only his second
start in place of the unlucky Plummer and Palmer moved into
midfield. His place at the back was taken by the fit again Matthew
Rose. The only other change saw Marcus Bignot and Ollie Burgess swap
roles from Saturday with Bignot this time warming the bench.
The start could not have been better. After only three minutes
Gallen played a beautifully weighted through ball into the path of
Doudou and he made no mistake. His calm side footed finish showed
that he is a player with the ability to do the simple things as well
as the more spectacular. The ground was still buzzing when Gallen
again turned provider.
His burst into the box was not contained by the Swindon defence and
he reached the by-line and cut the ball back into the six-yard box.
Steve Palmer met the ball with a volley that Bart Griemink did well
to parry. Unfortunately for him, the ball fell at the feet of Ollie
Burgess who fired powerfully into the net. The game was all but over
after only eight minutes and Rangers hadn't even broken a sweat.
Kevin Gallen was showing that his time away from Loftus Road has
been used wisely. He has matured into a far more composed and
cultured player to the one we had seen previously. His first touch
is now excellent and his ability to link play was there for all to
see. Do you know what? I think he might have lost a bit of weight as
well! That is not to say that Rangers did not have a heavyweight in
the team to rival the flabby frame of Neil Ruddock. In Danny Shittu,
we have an absolute monster of a centre back.
Shittu has been woefully underused during his one month loan spell
from Charlton. In his first game at Peterborough, he was the best
Rangers player on the park despite his red card. He then found
himself dumped on the bench, suspended and then left out to avoid
being cup-tied. He finally got a chance in what will be his last at
Rangers and what a display. He can't have turned in a performance
like this game since the Green Mile! (Think about it). He won every
header, was strong in every tackle and comfortable on the ball. You
had to feel sorry for Swindon striker Eric Sabin who was not
afforded a kick all night.
Gallen capped his display with a brilliantly taken goal of his own.
He received the ball inside the box with his back to goal. He faced
up to Andy Gurney, went passed him and fired fiercely passed
Griemink. It was the goal the whole ground wanted to see. Kevin
Gallen's Magic rang round The Loft as wild celebrations ensued.
Gallen however seemed strangely muted. I wonder if there is still a
little anger toward those that singled him out last time he was
here.
Just before half time Ollie Burgess went down under a heavy tackle
and was forced to leave the field. It did not look good for the
young midfielder, as it was clearly a problem with his knee. He got
up and ran around a bit before deciding he could not go on. The
scenes were eerily reminiscent of Langley's injury against Fulham
and we all know how that ended. Bignot replaced him and with it, all
impetus was lost.
After the break, Swindon seemed revitalised and Rangers could not
get going. Wave after wave of Swindon attacks came to nothing thanks
to the outstanding Shittu and the equally impressive Rose. Even
Christer Warren was turning in a good performance and it is not
often we get to give him any praise!
As is often the case when a team is so dominant before half time the
second period was pretty tepid stuff. Rangers knew Swindon would not
have enough to get back into the game and as a result, they did not
really make too much effort in an attacking sense. I would have
liked to see them really put Swindon to the sword, as I believe we
could have ended up with five or six if the performance level had
been maintained.
It was not until injury time that Rangers grabbed number four. Karl
Connolly supplied a fantastic ball to spring the Swindon offside
trap. Andy Thomson, on as a replacement for Doudou, collected the
ball and calmly rounded Griemink before slotting home from the
tightest of angles. We had seen three of our strikers score in the
same game, I could scarcely believe my eyes.
4-0 was comfortable enough and it was nice to see a good response
after the weekend but we still have some problem areas. Steve Palmer
played as a central midfielder, the position that Holloway bought
him for. In short he was poor, easily the worst display of the
evening. He gives little to the team in this position due to his
alarming lack of mobility and poor short range passing. As a big
man, he should be the commanding figure in the engine room of the
team but he is not. As the season has worn on he has become
something of a liability and it might be time for him to drop out of
the team. Nobody ever drops the captain though and I don't think
Holloway will be any different.
Our biggest test of the season comes at Griffin Park on Saturday. I
can't see us getting anything out of the game despite this improved
performance. Mind you I couldn't see us doing any better than a draw
tonight so what do I know! I think Holloway will pair Thomson and
Gallen together with Doudou dropping to the bench for use late in
the game. It would be nice if Holloway had a selection headache for
a change and looking at the finishing of these three tonight he may
just have got one. |
