| FOLEY THE
SAVIOUR IN EASTER RESURRECTION
Our second 3-2 win in three days and
anything other than a Rangers victory would have been a travesty.
The R's dominated the entire game and only two defensive rickets
gave County any hope of a victory. Holloway kept faith with the side
that achieved a fantastic win at Tranmere on Saturday. The Loftus
Road faithful were given a chance to see exactly what Jerome Thomas
could do and he didn't disappoint. Former Rangers man Ian Baraclough
lined up for County.
Rangers should
have taken the lead in the first five minutes. Kevin Gallen managed
to put a free header wide and County punished us almost immediately.
Their stock in trade all afternoon was the long ball aimed at
Heffernan and Allsopp and one such ball caught Danny Shittu in two
minds. He wasn't sure whether to control it or clear it and did
neither. The ball fell to Allsopp who in turn fed Heffernan for an
easy finish.
Gallen nearly
pulled Rangers level with a stinging volley just wide. Steve Palmer
also missed a free header when well placed. Gallen missed his third
good chance of the game with another volley after good work from
Langley.
With only fifteen
minutes played Andy Thomson's long-term back injury seemed to flair
up again and Dominic Foley replaced him. I wouldn't be surprised if
that was the last we saw of Thommo this season, as the back is still
fragile. He needs to be given a chance to rest it before pre-season
and we may be better served to just leave him out for the remaining
three games.
Shittu's second
error of the game saw Rangers fall two behind. Allsopp crossed from
the left and Shittu managed to totally misjudge it. Ian Baraclough
stole in behind him to side foot home. It was always going to
happen. Players with crappy goal scoring records for us always seem
to get one on their return. It was nice that Bara didn't celebrate
his goal; it showed that Rangers still hold a place in his heart.
The Loft even afforded him a round of applause before the inquests
started.
Just as the crowd
prepared to send the team in to a chorus of boos the Notts County
lead was halved. Gavin Peacocks corner pinged round the box and
finally found it's way to Thomas. His effort seemed to be going in
but Shittu made sure from no more than a yard.
Thomas had been
turning in yet another fantastic performance and it was clear to see
that County knew all about him. They attempted to put two men on him
whenever possible but this seemed to make little odds to him. Time
and again he mugged whoever was on him mush to the delight of the
Loftus Road crowd. If we can hang onto him for next season he will
become a massive fan favourite.
Foley nearly
dragged Rangers level just after half time. Good work from Gallen
saw the ball fall into his path but his blistering volley crashed
into the bar with Garden well beaten.
By now the
Rangers attacks were relentless and it only seemed a matter of time
before the equaliser came. When it did it came from an unlikely
source in Matthew Rose. Yet another corner was fired in and once
again County failed to clear their lines. Shittu picked up the ball
on the left wing and fired over a cross, which Rose headed firmly
past Garden.
Terrell Forbes
nearly claimed his first goal for the R's following a great passing
move involving five players. He found himself in front of goal but
had an attack of the Paul Parkers. His tame effort floated over the
bar when he should really have done better. It would have been no
more than Forbes deserved at the end of a season that will surely
see him crowned young player of the year.
With five minutes
left Rangers grabbed the winner. Dominic Foley was played in and he
coolly slotted a left footed effort into the corner. It was a great
finish from a player who had a massive impact after his
introduction. He demonstrated why Holloway thinks so highly of him
with a tremendous display of the target mans art. He has a good
touch and can clearly finish.
The final whistle
was met with cheers of relief as much as celebration. This was a
deserved victory and one that the team worked really hard for. Many
Rangers sides of the past would have rolled over after going two
goals down but not any more. The spirit and belief they showed in
their ability was tremendous and will surely stand us in good stead
for next season.
Holloway has said
that he wants to bring in a couple of Premiership youngsters for the
whole season and surely Jerome Thomas has to be one of those. He
could do a lot worse than secure the long-term services of Foley as
well as he is far better than division two standard.
We have given
ourselves the faintest chance of a play off place but the ultimate
aim must be automatic promotion next term. |
