RANGERS CAN'T PIP CHERRIES

Let's make no bones about it. This was a poor game and a poor result for Rangers in our quest to drag ourselves out of this division. The fine performance of Saturday seemed to have taken a lot out of the side and they never got going against lowly Bournemouth.

Andy Thomson returned to the starting line up after a good showing against Stoke with Richard Pacquette making way. There was still no place for Karl Connolly in the starting eleven as Leroy Griffiths continued on the left side.

The first half was as bad as I have seen at Rangers this season. Neither side could manage to string more than three passes together and a real route one battle ensued. This seemed an odd choice of tactics as a front pairing of Thomson and Doudou is hardly well equipped. On the other hand Derek Holmes for Bournemouth was good enough in the air to give Palmer and Shittu something to think about.

Both sides had efforts from range well off target. Doudou flashed one shot hopelessly off target and Griffiths volleyed well wide with the goal at his mercy following a ricket from Cherries keeper Stewart. One effort from Bournemouth had the Upper Loft diving for cover.

It was so poor that the first shot on target was not even registered until thirty ninth minute and it proved to be the opening goal. Griffiths was needlessly fouled on the left wing and Peacock's in swinging free kick was headed into the top corner by Steve Palmer for his fourth goal of the season. I would like to say it was a deserved lead but that would be a lie.

Bournemouth had their first shot on target after fifty minutes and this also ended up in the net. The impressive James Hayter swung a cross in from the left and Warren Feeney managed to pull onto the diminutive Murphy. The aerial contest was no match and Feeney planted his header wide of Digby's right hand.

Digby was forced into action again shortly after as Derek Holmes nearly sent an angled lob sailing over him. He did well to palm the effort away and showed why many rate him as our player of the season. I disagree, the bloke is a liability and I think he will end up costing us dear at some point.

Rangers only other shot on target came from Doudou. His weak effort was tipped away by Stewart and the shot just about summed up his performance. He was as poor as I have seen him and to be honest he looks absolutely buggered. He generally plays at about 200mph and this is going to take it out of you. I think Holloway would like to give him a couple of games rest but we don't seem to be able to function as a team without him.

In the closing stages, Richard Hughes was dismissed after receiving a second yellow card. Having already been cautioned for attempting to kick Murphy five times during one mazy run he then dived in with a ridiculous challenge on Griffiths, and left the ref little option.

The only other point of note in the game was the shameless time wasting that Bournemouth engaged in. Several players seemed to be feigning injury to wind down the clock, although the injury to Hayter did seem serious. The referee only added three minutes of stoppage time when five or six was probably in order. I don't know why that annoyed me, as we wouldn't have scored if we had been there all night.

There was barely one notable performance amongst the whole side. Palmer and Shittu did a job but they were hardly spectacular. Often their distribution was poor and Shittu in particular needs to have a touch and get his head up rather than just hoofing the ball every time. The majority of the long balls seemed to come from him. Danny Murphy was solid enough but Terrell Forbes was unrecognisable from Saturday. Against Stoke he gave what I consider to be his best performance to date, tonight he was poor.

In midfield Bignot, Peacock and Griffiths were all fairly quiet, Matthew Rose on the other hand turned in a man of the match performance. He was strong in the tackle, used the ball well and is turning into a fine midfielder. The fact he is playing so well may just be jeopardising Langley's return to the side. Mind you after tonight's performance I would be shocked if he didn't start at the McAlpine.

The front pair of Thomson and Doudou provided no cutting edge at all. Doudou ran about a lot but just couldn't get himself into the game. Thomson didn't even run about. I am not sure whether his mind is on other things, namely getting his arse out of Loftus Road as quick as his wife will carry him, but tonight's performance left a lot to be desired.

When it was announced that he had been listed there were not too many people in tears. Despite that fact that he is our top scorer he often contributes very little to games and if he hasn't scored you try to remember what he has done. Shouldn't take to long on this occasion!

A vast improvement is needed to get anything against Huddersfield but I am still confident. Hopefully Gallen will be back and his link up play will be vital. We will end up playing on the counter attack and we need him to get the best out of Doudou. Harsh words will be said and I hope they are heeded.
