EVERYTHING CHANGES

Monday 3rd September 2007
by Ron Norris

Saturday 1st September could prove to be the most momentous day in Queens Park Rangers history. The confirmation of the takeover means this football club looks set to change forever.

Flavio Briatore looks to be the public face of the deal, he is the one going to games and joining the board, he has excellent contacts within Italian football and a proven business background.

Personally I would have been delighted to just have him take over but the involvement of Bernie Ecclestone has really put the cat amongst the pigeons.

Let’s be clear we are talking about a serious amount of money here! To put it in perspective Bernie is worth more than Randy Learner (Aston Villa), Malcolm Glazer (Manchester United), Tom Hicks (Liverpool), Mike Ashley (Newcastle, although only just to be fair!) and Thaksin Shinawatra (Manchester City).

Of course there’s no guarantee that we’ll have the same sort of financial backing their new clubs have enjoyed however to have that amount of cash behind is frankly staggering.

So where are we headed in the future? Big signings, a new stadium, the Premier League? Possibly, sounds exciting doesn’t it. There’s always a flip side though, you could easily change those statements to overpaid mercenaries, bland football bowl, and stupidly expensive weekends if you wanted to be negative.

To be fair there’s been no such over promising from Bernie and Flavio. They have told BBC Radio London today that they want the club back in the top flight within four years, that they will restructure the whole place from top to bottom and that QPR fans deserve a professionally run football club. That all sounds good to me, we are talking about two people with a proven record of success, and I’ve no reason to think they will start failing now.

No one knows what the coming months and years will bring, but I can bet it will be a hell of a lot better than the continuing misery and heartache we looked set for if things had gone on the way they were.

This is going to be a hell of ride, jump on board and enjoy!
