But first, for those new to this,
and indeed to those who previously hit the little X in the
corner when previously confronted with my column, thanks for
popping by and let me explain what I will be attempting to do
throughout the season.
Every year players come and go at
QPR, but the majority of them you hardly hear even a whisper
about them once they've left. However, as a follower of the non
league game, I can assure you that many of them are still plying
there trade, albeit at grounds where you may end up seeing more
burgers than fans.
Within these pages I will be
keeping you up to date with their progress throughout the weeks.
As well as the ex players I will also keep you posted on
other connections to QPR. This could be anything from a player
we have been linked with, to the team we will be losing to in
the First round of the FA Cup this year!
So what brought me back to the
keyboard? Well on Monday night at Aylesbury, the mighty "ducks"
sprung a little surprise. The first was their new player coach -
Steve Gallen. Yes, the Magic Hat's brother was no doubt very
happy to prevent his more famous namesake from adding to his
tally.
Secondly, and at the other end of
the pitch, was another who failed to get on the score sheet.
Luke Sheekey. He scored goals by the hatful in a lower league at
the end of last season but wouldn't be sure of getting a
contract with Aylesbury after this game.
Rangers' most recent
departure Leroy Griffiths is also heading back to non-league.
The team hoping to get him to the contract stage is the other
side we have played so far - Farnborough
Town.
They are desperate to get him to sign, and he is expected to do
so any day now.
Barnet have signed two ex Rangers
players this summer. Although they may have both been struggling
to hold down a berth in their league teams I think you'll agree
with me that for a non-league side they will have one of the
strongest central defensive partnerships around this
season. They will start the first game with Danny Maddix and
Chris Plummer at the back!
Meanwhile Aldershot, who last
season probably had the most success with ex hoops have given a
trial to another - diminutive ex under-19 left wing back Sam
Scully. He not only played in the 5-0 demolition of Ash United
but also got on the scoresheet. Let's hope he can follow it up
with a contract.
In the management stakes, the most
distinguished ex player around is Paul Parker. He steered
Chelmsford to a respectable mid table finish in the Dr Martens
league last season amidst widespread praise for his management
ability, but he's had a change of view. Not impressed when told
he would have his budget cut back and zero money for players, he
took his ball and went to play elsewhere. His new employers are
Welling United and they are making it known they do have the
budget. So there's no excuse for Paul this season!
Finally, the player we all feel
sorry for and shake our heads in unison whenever we hear his
name is in the news again. Leon Jeanne earned a Welsh league
winners medal last season but, sadly, Barry Town have said
goodbye to him. They claim that his inability to hold down a
place at the end of the season suggests he will not make it into
the managers plans in the coming season, so they have decided to
"let him go". Where will he end up next? Who knows, it's a funny
old game, but I'll keep my eye open.
I can't keep up with everything
though. Non-league football is a massive entity. So in order to
make this the most informative column, I will need your help. If
you spot an ex hoop grabbing a headline on the back of the local
paper, drop me a line, and make sure he doesn't get away with
it!
Roll on the new
season...
