A Day In The Life Of ..... The PA Announcer
Saturday 13th December 2003
by Ron Norris

Ever wondered just what goes on behind the scenes at Loftus Road? In this new feature we aim to show you and to kick it off we spent a day at work with QPR's PA announcer Pete Nuttall. Pete has been Rangers' PA man since 1997 but how did a lad from Warrington end up working at, and supporting QPR in the first place?

Pete admits to being a bit of an Liverpool fan in his youth, pretty natural when your Dad lived on Anfield Road. In fact he only happened across Rangers by chance, at university he ended up sharing a flat with Karl Ready's brother "most of the house became QPR fans by default" says Pete.

Once university was out of the way Pete moved to London and watching Rangers seemed the obvious thing to do. He then managed to do what most fans dream of, get a job at the club they support, joining as the clubs DJ. When the then PA announcer left Pete was asked to fill in and has never stepped down.

If you find yourself watching sport on TV and thinking you recognise the PA mans voice that's because it's probably Pete! Since working at Rangers jobs and opportunities have flooded in and Pete can be heard at Wasps and Saracens Rugby clubs, The London Masters tournament and many showpiece Rugby League games but Rangers remains his first love.

Pete describes us a "a great little big club" and though he admits the club has had nothing but bad luck since he started following us "at least I'm not a glory boy"

He sees his job as giving supporters that little bit extra. "It's about giving them more than just a game" he tells us "plus if I can help raise the excitement then that gets the players going".

So what is a typical day for our man on the mic? QPRnet.com spent the Hartlepool game in Pete's company and here's how it went.

12:30
We arrive at Loftus Road to meet Pete in reception. After liaising with the club over the week organising the afternoons schedule Geraldine hands him the finalised running sheet.

12:40
We're off to the DJ booth to take a final check through the running order and add in any last minute additions like extra birthday announcements. Because of the weather there's no round the pole this week so instead Pete will be interviewing Gary Waddock about the in2win club lottery scheme

13:30
The rest of the team arrive, there's Pat who operates the scoreboard and our own Ormiston Hoop who's spinning the discs today. A discussion ensues as to whether Christmas songs should be played as it's the last match at Loftus Road before Christmas Day. Everyone agrees that the Cheeky Girls song will not be put on.

14:15
With all the preparation done it's off to pitch side to meet the mascots and get their names, ages, favourite players and the like for Pete to announce. Pete keeps in constant contact with the DJ booth through a walkie talkie and headset.

14:20
Time for Pete's first announcement, welcoming fans to the games, then he's off to the other side of the ground to pick up today's team sheets. Hartlepool have a Greek fella on the bench called Dimitrios Konstantopoulos so Pete's off to find someone who can tell him how to pronounce it!

14:30
Teams read out for the first time

14:40
Pete's hovering around the tunnel waiting to grab Clark Carlisle as he comes off from warming up to present him with the player of the month award for November.

14:50
Pete notices Jude has ripped the corner flag out and jumps on the chance to make a man in a giant cat suit dance with a corner flag by cueing up the Top Kat theme.

14:55
Five minutes to kick off and Star Wars bellows around the stadium. Pete explains that they always try to play certain tunes at the same time for a little
psychological continuity!

14:57
Ladies and Gentlemen this is Loftus Road, we are QPR…. You know the score

the teams run out

14:58

With the players on the pitch its time for one last team run through before kick off

First Half:
With three goals to announce it's a busy forty five minutes for Pete. After each goal goes in he barely has time to celebrate as he's straight onto the DJ booth to double confirm the scorer before announcing it. "I always double double check having once had the whole ground laughing at me for announcing Chris Kiwomya as the scorer of a Rob Steiner goal"

Half Time:
Whilst it's a break for the players and fans for Pete it's the busiest part of the afternoon. Today he has several birthday announcements, the box lottery draw and an interview with Gary Waddock to conduct over the PA system.

Second Half:
More goals and four substitutions to announce keeps Pete on his toes. "I said we'd score four" Pete points out....

With the final whistle it's time to thank the fans, cue up Jeff Beck and send everyone home happy!

So that's a day in the life of a PA announcer. We'd like to thank everyone at Rangers who went out of their way to help us organise this day and especially we'd like to thank Pete for letting us hang on his coat tails all day
